VILA NOVA DE MILFONTES

Vila Nova de Milfontes is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Odemira, district of Beja, located on the north bank of the mouth of the River Mira. It is inserted in the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina.
It has an area of ​​75.88 km² and 5031 inhabitants (2011). Its population density is 65.9 inhabitants / km².
Because it is located on the coast, this region was often plagued by pirates, who plundered and assaulted the population and boats. In the 16th to 18th centuries, pirates from North Africa, especially those from Algiers, afflicted the Portuguese coast dramatically. To face this climate of fear and instability, at the end of the 16th century, the fort of São Clemente (Milfontes castle) was built.
This locality is linked to the great feat of Portuguese aviation, which was the first crossing between Portugal and Macau, carried out by Brito Paes and Sarmento Beires. It was on April 7, 1924, that the pilots left Campo dos Coitos, near Milfontes, towards the East. In honor of the aviators and their historic achievement, a monument that recalls the heroic journey was erected in Praça da Barbacã, next to the fort.
The main economic activities of the parish are tourism, commerce and services, agriculture, livestock, fishing (the portinho do Canal is the largest fishing port in the municipality), civil construction, and even forestry production.
