Alvito is a Portuguese municipality belonging to the district of Beja, Alentejo region and sub-region of Baixo Alentejo, with about 2,504 inhabitants.
Based in the homonymous village of Alvito, the Municipality of Alvito has an area of ​​264.85 km² and 2 504 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 2 parishes (Alvito; Vila Nova da Baronia). The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Viana do Alentejo, east by Cuba, south and west by Ferreira do Alentejo and west by Alcácer do Sal.
The name Alvito comes from Olivetto, which means olive grove, a fact proven by the ancient olive trees found in the municipality.

Its geographical location in Alvito allows for easy access either by road or rail.
The railway line that serves the municipality provides intercity and regional train services, which make the connection between Lisbon and Beja. At these two points, other lines of the railway network from different parts of the country cross. In Beja, the connection to the Algarve line is made, thus establishing a connection bridge to this region.

As for the roads, it should be noted that the town of Alvito is located 173Km from Lisbon, 37Km from Beja, 43Km from Évora, 198Km from Faro and 147Km from Badajoz (Spain). The best road route coming from Lisbon is the A2 (Ponte 25 de Abril) or the A12 (Ponte Vasco da Gama), taking the A6 towards Évora. Then, take the EN254 to Viana do Alentejo, to finish with the passage on the EN257 to Alvito.
